HAND BLOCK-PRINTING
"By selecting such a traditional method of printing, my hope is that this collection is timeless and the pieces will be passed down to our children and grandchildren."
Our baby quilts, pillows, and market totes are printed by hand with wooden blocks in Rajpur, India. Hand block-printing is a traditional and wonderfully simple method that produces soft colors and beautiful pattern variations. Subtle imperfections bear the makers hand, which mean no two textiles are exactly alike.
After selecting some of our favorite patterns, the artisans at JOYN carved our designs by hand into wooden blocks, as well as hand mixed dyes and inks to match our colors. The printers then dipped the blocks into the ink trays and stamped the pattern from left to right, one color at a time, aligning the blocks perfectly by eye. Once the printing was complete, the fabric was hung to dry so that the ink could fix in the sun. JOYN's artisans then cut the printed fabric and other materials by hand, and used a foot powered sewing machine to put the finishing touches on these heirloom pieces.
